Welcome to Health
I help students to understand how their genes affect their diet and wellness so that they can live happy and healthy lives.
Who am I?
I'm a mother of five and a holistic nutritionist passionate about empowering families to take control of their health naturally. My path to holistic nutrition had it’s ups and downs, but has lead me to a place where healing can occur.
I started my education at Virginia Tech, where I learned conventional nutrition and health principles. But as I raised my own family, I began asking deeper questions. Why were so many children struggling with health issues? Why did conventional approaches often fall short? What role did toxins, pesticides, and processed foods play in the chronic health challenges families face today?
These questions led me back to school, where I discovered holistic nutrition—an approach that honors the body's innate wisdom and focuses on root causes rather than just managing symptoms. I would love to be your teacher. We can work together so you understand the whys of health, not just me telling you what to do.I look forward to working with you.
My Story: Why I am so passionate about health
My interest in health started as a child in the 80s. I was one of those kids who played a sport every season of the year. I started seeing weight become an issue for the people around me and started reading Nutrition Facts Labels as soon as they were introduced. Even in elementary school, I knew that this information was important in helping people understand what they were eating. I was young, so of course I fell into a lot of the nutrition traps of the day like low-fat diets and the idea that the cholesterol in eggs was unhealthy. I was a runner in high school and was on the crew team in college so a degree in exercise just made sense. I started studying in the Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise department at Virginia Tech with one emphasis on Exercise and Health Promotion and another on Dietetics. I felt like I had the whole package with education in diet and exercise.
About six months after graduating from college, I started noticing swollen lymph nodes in my neck. After almost a year of illness, I was finally diagnosed with Stage 3B Hodgkins Disease. Even though I knew a lot about health, I never struggled with weight issues. This led me to be one of the “eat whatever you want” kinds of people. Getting a cancer diagnosis was one of the turning points in my life. I realized that people who look healthy on the outside could be very ill on the inside. A regular body weight does not equate to health. I had not begun my natural health journey at that point and went through conventional chemotherapy treatment. I went into remission almost immediately. I would certainly do things differently now that I know better.
One thing they do not tell you about chemotherapy is that it often causes secondary cancers down the road. For years I lived with this fear in the back of my mind, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Then one day I decided that I would not allow myself to live in fear and that additional cancers did not have to be my fate. I went on to have five beautiful children who are now ages 10-18. I have raised them with an awareness of the importance in keeping their bodies active and eating healthy foods. It often feels like a losing battle to compete with Big Food and all of the processed food options that entice us with cost and ease. We help ourselves and our children when we make healthy changes in our diet and lifestyle. I have hope that we can decrease the risk of illness for our children by the changes we make today.
